High mast poles light large open areas from a single tall position, so the mast height you choose directly affects how many masts a site needs, how uniform the light is, and the overall project cost. Choosing well starts with the area, not the pole.
Start with the area and required lux
Define the area to be lit and the target average lux and uniformity for its use — a highway interchange, a port yard and a parade ground each have different requirements. Taller masts light a wider circle, so fewer are needed, but each carries more luminaires and costs more individually. The economic sweet spot balances mast count against per-mast cost.
Typical height bands
- 12–16 m — parking areas, small yards, junctions
- 16–25 m — large parking, toll plazas, medium grounds
- 25–40 m — highway interchanges, ports, railway yards, stadiums
Don't forget maintenance and wind
A raise-and-lower lantern carriage lets crews service luminaires at ground level, which matters more as masts get taller. And every mast must be engineered for the site wind zone (to IS 875) — height increases wind load, so the structure and foundation must be designed accordingly.
